Searchmetrics SEO Visibility: The Metric, the Formula, and What to Use Now
Searchmetrics SEO Visibility was a modeled index, not a traffic count. Here is the distinction, a worked example for your own transparent indicator, and the evidence to inspect before choosing the next fix.
The Short Version
Searchmetrics SEO Visibility was a single index score estimating how visible a domain was across organic search, calculated from a fixed keyword set, each keyword's search volume, and a position weighting derived from click-through models. It was not traffic. It was a modelled share of the visibility available on a standard basket of keywords.
Conductor announced its acquisition of Searchmetrics on February 7, 2023, and the current legacy page identifies Searchmetrics as part of Conductor.
The metric itself is not dead, though. You can build a transparent indicator using the same broad ingredients, while being explicit that it is not a reproduction of the proprietary index.
Why This Page Exists
The question still appears in our own search data. From September 3 through September 9, 2026, this page recorded 41 impressions and zero clicks for searchmetrics seo visibility, at an impression-weighted position of 3.73. That is a small observation, but it gives the page a clear job: explain the metric people are asking about.
The current Searchmetrics legacy page points readers to Conductor. The explanation here separates that product history from a calculation you can inspect yourself.
How the Index Actually Worked
The mechanics were never fully open, but the shape of the calculation is well documented and it is not complicated.
- A fixed keyword set. This was the important design choice, and the one most people miss. Searchmetrics did not measure your keywords. It measured a large standard basket of keywords per country, the same basket for every domain. That is what made the scores comparable across competitors, and it is also why a domain could post a low score while doing perfectly well on the terms it actually cared about.
- Search volume weighting. Each keyword contributed in proportion to how often it was searched. Ranking for something nobody searches moves nothing.
- Position weighting from a CTR model. Each ranking position carried a weight reflecting the share of clicks that position typically earns. First place counted enormously more than fifth, which counted enormously more than fifteenth.
- Aggregate and index. Sum the weighted contributions and express the result as an index value rather than a percentage of anything intuitive. The number was meaningful compared against itself over time or against a competitor, and meaningless in isolation.
That last point caused endless confusion. A visibility score of 4,200 tells you nothing. A visibility score that fell from 4,200 to 2,900 in a week tells you a great deal.
The Assumption to Inspect
The click model matters. Different query populations and position weights can produce different scores from the same ranking list. Without the original basket, weights, and scaling, an independently calculated number should not be labeled the Searchmetrics index.
Our CTR by Search Position dataset provides a dated first-party example with the raw buckets and sample sizes, released under CC BY 4.0. The September 7 export covers 368,474 disclosed-query impressions across 120 properties. It is context for choosing a model, not a universal curve.
Rebuilding the Metric Yourself
Document the keyword basket, each keyword’s search-volume estimate, its ranking observations, and the click model. Those inputs let someone reproduce your indicator.
- A keyword set you commit to. Pick it once and stop changing it. The moment you add or drop keywords, your score stops being comparable to its own history, which was the only thing it was ever good for. Searchmetrics solved this by fixing the basket globally. You solve it by fixing yours and leaving it alone.
- Positions for those keywords. Search Console gives you average position for anything you already rank for. A rank tracker fills in the rest.
- A position weighting curve. Use ours, or better, calculate your own from your own Search Console data. The full formula and a worked example are written out step by step.
Run that monthly against the same basket and you have a transparent visibility indicator of your own. It will not reproduce a proprietary Searchmetrics score: the keyword basket and position weights can differ. The useful advantage is knowing exactly what went into your calculation.
A Small Worked Example
Suppose two keywords each have a monthly search volume of 100. Your chosen click model assigns your current positions expected CTRs of 10 percent and 2 percent, while first place is assigned 20 percent for both terms. These are illustrative inputs, not a universal CTR curve.
The expected-click numerator is (100 × 0.10) + (100 × 0.02) = 12. The first-place denominator is (100 × 0.20) + (100 × 0.20) = 40. Your relative visibility is 12 / 40 = 30 percent.
That is a model output. It does not mean you received 12 clicks, and it is not the proprietary Searchmetrics index. For the full definition and the limits of substituting GSC impressions for search volume, use the search visibility formula.
What the Metric Never Told You, and Still Does Not
Rebuilding the old index is worth doing. It is also worth being clear about what you are rebuilding.
SEO Visibility measured one surface: ranked organic results. In 2023 that was most of the picture. It is a shrinking share of it now. The metric cannot see whether you appear in an AI Overview, whether an answer engine cites you, or whether a knowledge panel is answering your query before anyone reaches a result at all. A domain can hold a stable visibility index while quietly losing the surfaces that increasingly decide whether anyone encounters it.
That is not a criticism of the metric. It measured what was measurable, honestly, for the era it was built in. It is a caution against treating a single number as a complete answer now that the results page has stopped being one thing. The argument for tracking surfaces separately is laid out in Search Visibility Index vs. AI Visibility Science, and the retrieval-side half of the picture is covered in AI Search Visibility vs. Search Visibility.
So What Replaced It
Commercially, Conductor absorbed the product and the European customer base. Practically, the visibility-index concept lives on in almost every rank tracking tool under a different name: Semrush and Ahrefs both ship their own visibility or share-of-voice metric built on the same three inputs.
Do not compare the resulting numbers until you have checked the keyword coverage, weights, and scale each product uses.
Which brings the whole thing back around to the same place. The metric was never magic. It was volume, position, and a click curve, wrapped in a number that only meant something relative to itself. A transparent indicator makes those assumptions inspectable. Its value is helping you choose the next question, with actual traffic and inquiries measured separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
What was Searchmetrics SEO Visibility?
A single index score estimating how visible a domain was in organic search, calculated from a large fixed keyword set, each keyword's search volume, and a position weighting derived from click-through-rate models. It was a modelled share of available visibility on a standard keyword basket, not a measurement of actual traffic.
What happened to Searchmetrics?
Conductor acquired Searchmetrics in February 2023, bringing across its European team, data assets, and customer base. The searchmetrics.com domain now redirects to conductor.com, and the standalone SEO Visibility index is no longer marketed as an independent product under the Searchmetrics name.
How was Searchmetrics SEO Visibility calculated?
Each keyword in a fixed national keyword set contributed in proportion to its search volume, weighted by a factor reflecting the click share of the position the domain held. Those weighted contributions were summed and expressed as an index value. Because the keyword set was fixed and identical across domains, scores were comparable between competitors, but a low score did not necessarily mean poor performance on the terms a business actually cared about.
What is a good SEO visibility score?
There is no absolute threshold, because the index value has no intuitive unit. It is meaningful only compared against its own history or against a direct competitor measured on the identical keyword set. A score that moves sharply tells you something; a score in isolation tells you nothing.
Can I calculate SEO visibility myself?
Yes. You need a keyword set you commit to and stop changing, ranking positions for those keywords from Search Console or a rank tracker, and a CTR-by-position curve to weight the positions. AI Symantix publishes a first-party curve measured across 368,000 impressions under CC BY 4.0, and calculating your own from your Search Console data is better still.
