What Search Console Contributes
Google Search Console is the primary source for Google-disclosed impressions, clicks, click-through rate, average position, indexing signals, and supported enhancement reports. It can show which disclosed queries and pages are gaining or losing Search exposure. It does not provide a complete record of every query or every click.
Use the Dimensions Correctly
Query, page, country, and device reports are separate views of the same performance system. Totals can differ when Google omits anonymized queries or applies reporting limits. A query total should not be joined casually to a page total. Use query-to-page data when the relationship itself matters, and label every date range, search type, country, and device filter.
AI Search Measurement
Google includes traffic from AI features in the Web search type. The standard performance report does not expose a dedicated AI Overview dimension, so Search Console cannot prove that a specific click came from an AI-generated result. It can still reveal machine-shaped questions, pages earning impressions for those questions, and changes that deserve closer review.
Practical Checks
- Use URL Inspection for index and canonical evidence.
- Review enhancement reports for supported structured data.
- Export query-to-page rows when diagnosing intent ownership.
- Compare equivalent date windows and preserve the filters.
- Combine Search Console with analytics and server logs without treating one source as complete.
