Generative Search Visibility

Also known as: Generative AI Search Visibility

Generative search visibility is the degree to which a source, brand, page, product, or person is represented, cited, or linked inside search experiences that generate an answer rather than only displaying an ordered list of results. It should be measured separately from traditional ranking visibility because generated answers can mention and cite multiple entities without assigning each one a position.

The term overlaps with AI search visibility. Generative search visibility emphasizes the generated answer surface, while AI search visibility can also include the broader retrieval and representation process behind it.

Useful measurements include presence, prominence, citations, source ownership, factual accuracy, competitors, and changes across repeated runs. A mention is not automatically a recommendation, and a citation is not automatically a visit.

Keep the prompt set, surfaces, dates, and scoring method visible whenever a generative visibility score is reported.
